History

At age 19, Helene Madison became the first female Olympian to win three gold medals in one Olympics. Helene won the 100- and 400-meter freestyle and was part of the winning 4-by-100-meter freestyle relay team in the 1932 Los Angeles Games. She once held every world freestyle record from 50 yards to 1 mile and was honored as one of the five greatest American Olympians of the first half of the 20th century by being placed on an Olympics postage stamp. Helene trained for many years prior to the Olympics at the Washington Athletic Club pool, which was named in her honor in 1968.
