Snack on Nuts

By Shana Hopkins, MS, CN, WAC Nutritionist

Nuts are probably one of the healthiest and easiest snacks that I advise my clients to eat. They can easily be carried in a resealable bag, and stored in a purse or the top drawer of your desk.

Many people avoid nuts due to their high fat content, but the fact is that some fats are good for you. Nuts contain primarily monounsaturated fats, which are heart-healthy. Monounsaturates actually help to lower the "bad" LDL cholesterol in your blood, while raising the "good" cholesterol, HDL.

I usually suggest eating nuts raw and unsalted; this helps to prevent overeating the nuts. Most nuts have about 150–200 calories per 1/4 cup, which is a nice afternoon snack.
