Detroit Athletic ClubDetroit, Michigan241 Madison Ave.Detroit, MI 48226 Phone: 313.963.9200 www.thedac.com Reviewed July 2008Like a fine-tuned American classic car, the Detroit Athletic Club represents the perfect marriage of classic lines and modern function. Originally founded in 1887 by an elite group devoted to amateur athletics, the Club was repositioned (figuratively and literally) in 1913. That's when a group of automotive industry leaders saved the club from financial dissolve and developed the architectural masterpiece now gracing downtown Madison Avenue. The car leaders left their mark: Not only can WAC members fill their tanks onsite, but they can also do as Detroiters do and top it off (pun intended!) with a wash and detail job. Or not—the Detroit Athletic Club is conveniently located within walking distance of several theaters, sports complexes and places to shop. Autos aside, athletics are still front and center at this fine club, with its 14 glass-encased squash/handball/racquetball courts, a massive gym with views of Comerica Park (catch a Tigers game here!), the country's largest private club bowling league and a 25-yard swimming pool. WAC baseball fans will particularly appreciate the DAC's connections to Detroit baseball history. Eight of the team's 10 past owners are active members, including current owner Mike Ilitch. If your visit is all business, the DAC offers 28 elegantly appointed overnight rooms, casual to formal dining, a business center, an onsite tailor (for that ill-fitting suit that inadvertently got packed) and, most importantly, an iconic local address to impress Detroit clients. With everything you could possibly need during your stay in Motor City, this club is definitely the luxury model.
