Now WAC members have yet another option. Thanks to a Reciprocal Club relationship with Smoke Tree Ranch in sunny Palm Springs, members can plan a vacation with little risk of precipitation and lots of private desert (375 acres, in fact) to explore. The historic western-style property was founded in 1925, encom-passing forty nine guest cottages and 85 private homes. Over the years, some of the world's foremost families and famous names like former President Eisenhower and Walt Disney have reccessed here. Smoke Tree Ranch can best be described as John Wayne cowboy flair meets Fred Astaire debonair. And while western tradition is respected, modern comforts prevail. Inside the jasmine and bougainvillaea-laced cottages, plush beds, wood-burning fireplaces and Internet access beckon. Lazy day activities entice: Lounge in the Ranch House in an overstuffed chair or take a deck of cardsinto the library. Outside, ride a horse, hike a few miles, swim in the Olympic-size pool or practice your short game on the three-hole practice course. Serious golfers can book a tee time on one of Palm Springs' many courses through the Ranch's helpful concierge. Fuel up in the Dining Room, where WAC member and visitor Llewelyn Pritchard attests, "The food is good and the drinks are stiff!" In true ranch style, guests are served straight from the kitchen.
