Sand castle

At the Surf Club in Florida, you've got a whole world in the sand

"This is a true gem in the WAC group of reciprocal clubs," writes member Kermit Brandt.
Indeed, this little jewel on the Atlantic coast has been sparkling since 1930, attracting members, reciprocal guests, even dignitaries to its pristine location on Miami Beach.

Case in point: Winston Churchill once painted seascapes from his Surf Club cabana—the perfect pastime for enjoying 1,000 feet of private beach at your doorstep.

Whatever your palette, the Surf Club is apt to please. Solitude seekers can kick back by the pool (which, according to Kermit, was blissfully quiet), while social butterflies can kick up their heels and dance to live entertainment Saturday nights.

You might even kick-start a new friendship or two; member Joe Sasenick did. "The people are really friendly," he recalls. "During our last stay, even the general manager came over and chatted with us."

Just beyond the club lies a shopper's paradise at toney Bal Harbor—and an opportunity to spend what you saved from the Surf Club's very reasonable hotel rates. Nieman's, Cartier and other renowned retail shops have plenty to tempt you out of what's left in your wallet.

Did you spend too much? Who knows, maybe you can sell that seascape you just painted at the beach!
