Safety on our waterways—that’s the primary mission of the U.S. Coast Guard. Base Seattle, located at Sodo’s Pier 36, oversees the safety and navigation of over 3,000 square miles of bays, straits, open ocean, and more. In addition to its search and rescue efforts, the Coast Guard conducts research; escorts ferries, Navy vessels, and cruise ships; and boards an average of 600 boats per year. We’ll meet at Pier 36 to learn about the Maritime Safety and Security Team, K9 explosive detection team, the armory, and Base Seattle’s small boats. We’ll also join Coast Guard staff for lunch and go aboard a high-endurance cutter or other ship, if one is in port, to see what it’s like to be part of a maritime mission. Extensive walking and ship ladders. Ages 8-plus.
