A toast to cocktails

The WAC’s mixed-drink scene keeps getting better

Executive Team 5By Peter Christian, Vice President Food & Beverage

You know that moment where you’re cooking up so much homemade gin that one more drop might earn you a visit from the ATF? Me either! But Straightaway cocktail company founders Cy Cain and Casey Richwine sure do. The pair’s home-cooked libations became so popular with friends a few years back that they had no choice—it was time to go legal.

Thus was born the premade and gorgeously labeled concoctions of Straightaway. If ever there were a cocktail lover’s perfect beverage during these late days of a global pandemic, this is it.

The company makes seven beautifully bottled cocktails that require nothing but ice. Of course, a few friends with whom to share would be nice! Enter our February Thirsty Thursday event, where WAC members are invited to get up close and personal with Straightaway.

In fact, the first two Thirsty Thursdays of the year will continue a three-month focus on liquor. In January, tequila from El Jimador and Herradura come into focus. The triad of liquor-based tasting events began this past December with Empress Gin from Victoria, British Columbia.

Our cocktail program has been expanding steadily for the past couple of years—from the launch of the Cocktail Club to various cocktail dinners and now to more tasting events open to all WAC members.

For the Straightway Thirsty Thursday, we’ll be sipping a selection of the distiller’s premade drinks. Their bottle list includes Maple Old Fashioned, Margarita, Lintik,
Negroni, Oregon Old Fashioned, Paper Plane, and The Cosmos.

It’s a stellar lineup. The event also includes cocktail hors d’oeuvres.

January’s Thirsty Thursday gets the year started with a tequila tasting. Event attendees will take their margarita skills to a new level with El Jimador Reposado. We’ll also enjoy a profile tasting of four levels of Herradura, including history and tasting education from the experts. The WAC kitchen will provide take-home Mexican regional specialties to enjoy with the tasting.

Whether you’re new to the cocktail scene or an old hand behind the bar, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the burgeoning scene here at the WAC. Cheers!
