Club Shop remodel begins
Summer Clubhouse projects also include cleaning of building façade
Major renovations to the space formerly occupied by the lobby-level Club Shop are now underway. When the space re- opens this fall, it will feature a new coffee shop and drop-in workspace, connection with the Voogd Library, windows over- looking Sixth Avenue, and reservable room for small meetings. The Club Shop itself will relocate to a new space behind the Member Services desk on the lobby level. The twofold renovation marks the second and final phase of Project 51, which began when the Barbershop was moved to the 5th Floor.
The new lobby-level coffee shop also marks the first major Clubhouse update to be supported by the Washington Athletic Club Foundation. In addition, the Foundation will help fund exterior cleaning of the WAC Clubhouse, set to begin in August, as well as future capital improvement projects. The new coffee shop will continue to expand the Club’s remote work offerings with various seating options and a private room reservable for meetings up to four people. Members will be able to purchase food and espresso.
“This new space will be yet another location within the Clubhouse where members can work remotely while en- joying their favorite beverage in extreme comfort,”WAC Chief Operating Officer Wayne Milner says.
The project will also uncover historic windows and shed new light into the space. In addition, a doorway into the Voogd Library will allow easier access to a member-favorite reading room that has been difficult to access during private events in the Johnson Lobby Lounge. The library’s wood-paneled charm makes it the perfect place for members to read and relax.
Retail sales will move to the new Club Shop, which will continue to carry a selection of WAC-branded gear and other apparel. During the project, members can visit the 6th Floor Club Shop for apparel, the 8th Floor WAC Café for casual dining, and the Inn at the WAC front desk for sundries. Renovation of the new lobby-level spaces is scheduled for completion in early fall.
