Expanded lobby coffee shop to mark Foundation milestone

The WAC Foundation’s first project is slated to start this year

The first Clubhouse improvement project to be supported by the Washington Athletic Club Foundation is scheduled to start later this year, and you can help! A new lobby-level coffee shop with drop-in workspace and a private meeting room is slated to be installed in the current Club Shop with a door connecting to the historic Voogd Library. One of the most exciting parts of the project—daylighting boarded-over historic windows that will reconnect the northeast corner of the lobby with the outdoors, allowing natural light to flow into the remodeled space.

“This is a perfect project to kick off donors’ investment in the Foundation,” WAC Foundation President Tammy Young says. “We’re going to keep the historic feel of the library while also opening that space to more members and better use. It’s a beautiful space that we want all members to enjoy.”

The Washington Athletic Club Foundation is a member-funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the sole purpose of preserving and enhancing the WAC Clubhouse, a National Historic Landmark. The Foundation invests all funds into Clubhouse improvement projects.

“These projects are a direct result of our members’ desire to invest in our historic Clubhouse in a way that delivers very tangible member benefits,” WAC President & CEO Chuck Nelson says.

The Foundation provides funds for capital improvement that would otherwise need to come from the Club’s operating budget, allowing additional investment in Club projects, equipment, services, and staffing. Foundation donors of $10,000 or more will be honored on the donor recognition wall in the lobby, also set for installation this year. Donations of all sizes are accepted and may be pledged or made in cash, securities, or other property. Recognition levels include Bronze ($10,000-plus), Silver ($25,000-plus), Gold ($50,000-plus), and Platinum ($100,000-plus). Room name privileges and other recognition are also available.

As part of the library coffee shop project, Club Shop retail sales will move into a vacant space near the lobby-level Member Services desk.
