Small steps toward big change

When working towards optimal health and wellness, there are a few basic foundations that can help you simplify the process. Most of us already know what we need to do to maintain our health, but we don’t always do the things that we know will keep us physically independent, mentally sharp, and well enough to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases associated with age.

Before we discuss what you already know, here are three tips to help you get on track to improving your quality of life.

  1. What do you want? Having a clear vision of your fitness goals is the first step in achieving them.
  1. Start small with one focused action and grow from there. One of the main reasons people fail to achieve success when setting goals is because they overwhelm themselves with too much at once. It’s more realistic and productive to start with steps. Eventually, these small steps add up and lead you to achieving your goals.
  1. Document your progress over the course of a month. You want to make sure the steps you take can be planned and measured to keep you accountable. Use a calendar to track daily progress and evaluate how you did at the end of a month. Evaluate what worked and what didn’t, adjust the sails if need be, and keep moving forward.

If you can practice these simple steps repeatedly over a year, you will find yourself progressing toward your end goal in no time. At the end of the year, you will look back and see how far you’ve come by maintaining your focus.
