USA Rugby Club 7s national championships

WAC men win rugby national title; women place 5th.

The WAC men’s and women’s rugby 7s teams spent the summer winning tournaments and qualifying for the Club 7s National Championships in Kansas City, held August 10–11.

The WAC men won the national championship by winning five out of six matches, including a convincing 24–7 final win over Life West. The men were led by captain Peter Tiberio, who scored along with Mat Turner and Shane Moore in the deciding match. Tiberio was named Player of the Final.

A smothering defense led by Tommy Clark, Scott Dean, Ian Wright, Miles Craigwell, Dion Crowder, and Mike Palefau held the powerful Life West squad in check after an early score. Other strong contributors included Noah Wright, Lui Sitama and Eric Duechle. The champions were coached by Shalom Suniula.

The WAC women were plate winners, finishing in fifth place among 16 teams. Strong performances by Jennine Duncan, Megan Sanders, Erica Legaspi, Anne Peterson, Jenny Johnson and Christa Banks led the way.
